This seems to be a growing trend, because earlier this winter Alfonso Soriano told his new team (the Washington Nationals) that he wasn't going to play centerfield after hearing reports that's what the Nationals wanted to do: move him to centerfield.
With Soriano I get it some what, he's a high caliber second baseman and would be wasted in the outfield. In Barry's case he's shooting off his mouth in front of the press, which is something over the years he's perfected.
It boils down to respect, or the lack of in this case.
