After a not so great Spring Training debut, King Felix posted 3 scoreless innings, striking out three
and only allowing three hits (two singles, and a double). He also got a little help from teammate Jeremy Reed who tracked down and caught it saving at the least one run. (Box Score)
"He saved my life," Hernandez joked. He added that he had a better sinking fastball and focused
between starts on pitching more to the corners of home plate.
Reed ended up hitting .500 for the game. Going 1 for 2, with a run scored and one RBI. It would seem that Rene Rivera who's having a terrible spring, has fallen out of favor as the back up to Kenji Johjima. Corky Miller has apparently stood out this spring and could be giving Rivera a run for his money. Raul Ibanez when 3-3, with a home run and RBI and scored 2 runs.
This seemed to be a solid win for the Mariners, something that they really haven't done this spring. One thing that'll be interesting is when Adrian Beltre returns to camp. He's on fire with the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, now hopefully he'll bring that swing back to camp and put up numbers similar to his 2004 form, showing that last year was about adjusting to the American League. He's even gone as far as going back to wearing #29.
Some more game notes:
Seattle's Gil Meche is scheduled to pitch on Monday for the
first time since straining a left oblique muscle on Feb. 28. He
will start against the Los Angeles Angels. Jamie Moyer is to start
Monday morning's "B" game against Texas in nearby Surprise .
Kevin Appier, attempting a comeback
with Seattle at 38, pitched two scoreless innings with two
strikeouts. He hasn't allowed a run in two spring outings spanning
five innings. (Who's giving more of a showing than Dave Burba.)
Emphasis is mine.
Up next on the Menu: The LA Angels and a split squad will take on Texas. Gil Meche will get his first start since sustaining that injury that had him out pretty much all of last week. Jamie Moyer will take the hill in the "B" game against the Rangers.
